Acupuncture for Chronic Fatigue
Acupuncture for Chronic Fatigue: Does It Help with Low Energy?

Acupuncture for chronic fatigue syndrome and post viral fatigue works by supporting the nervous system and helping the body shift out of a constant “on alert” state. It will not give you an instant energy boost. Used consistently over a course of treatment, it can improve energy levels, sleep and the ability to function day to day for many people with fatigue syndromes.
In short
- Acupuncture for chronic fatigue syndrome has been studied in randomised trials with promising, if still developing, evidence
- Research into acupuncture for long covid shows benefits for fatigue, sleep and cognitive symptoms
- Treatment is paced carefully, since overexertion can worsen symptoms in fatigue syndromes
- Sessions combine acupuncture with practical advice on pacing activity or exercise, sleep and nutrition
- Not suitable as a stand-alone treatment where a serious underlying illness is present or has not been ruled out
Does acupuncture help with fatigue syndromes?
Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS, is a complex condition with no single proven treatment, which is exactly why an integrative approach can help. A 2019 systematic review of 55 randomised controlled trials for CFS/ME found that among the non-pharmacological options studied, acupuncture and abdominal tuina were among the few interventions to show a statistically significant effect on fatigue-related outcomes (PMC, 2019). A more recent 2026 review focused specifically on acupuncture-based Chinese medicine therapies for chronic fatigue syndrome, pulling together trial data on symptom scores across multiple studies (Frontiers, 2026). One randomised trial using specific points, St36 Zusanli and Ren4 Guanyuan, found measurable changes in heart rate variability, a marker of how balanced the autonomic nervous system is, which offers a plausible mechanism for why patients often describe feeling calmer as well as less exhausted (ScienceDirect, 2025).
Acupuncture for long covid and post viral fatigue
Post viral fatigue, including long covid, shares many features with ME/CFS: persistent exhaustion, poor sleep, brain fog and a tendency for symptoms to worsen after exertion. A large 2024 meta-analysis of 110 randomised controlled trials looking at acupuncture for the neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms of long covid found benefits across fatigue, sleep quality, low mood and cognitive symptoms, using standard clinical scales (PMC, 2024). This matters because post viral fatigue is still poorly served by conventional medicine, and many patients are looking for something that addresses the whole pattern of symptoms rather than one in isolation.
What happens during treatment for low energy and tiredness?
Your first session is a detailed consultation covering your energy pattern through the day, sleep, digestion, stress and any triggers that make your fatigue worse. This matters more with fatigue syndromes than almost any other condition we treat, because pushing too hard, in treatment or in daily life, can set people back.
Treatment is generally gentle, and we build up gradually rather than treating intensively from the first visit. We also talk through pacing strategies, since managing activity levels is often as important as the treatment itself, and monitoring daily activities can help quantify progress. An integrated approach often benefits patients as well, when appropriate we can give calibrated exercises to help start to build strength and resilience up at a tolerable accessible level. It is empowering for people to have something they can control that helps them progress.
What we see with fatigue patients
In practice, we often see patients who have had normal blood tests, been told there is nothing structurally wrong, and are still struggling to get through a working day. Progress with fatigue syndromes is rarely linear. Some weeks bring a clear lift in energy, others bring a plateau, and we adjust the plan accordingly.
What we tend to see over a longer course is better sleep quality first, then a gradual increase in what a person can do before symptoms flare. We treat conservatively and honestly, and we will tell you if progress isn’t happening as expected.
The history of onset in chronic fatigue syndromes almost always includes some kind of febrile illness. This is there by definition in ‘post viral fatigue’ or long covid, but on questioning is there with the majority of patients with ME/ CFS patients as well. It’s like the immune system has been affected by the impact of the disease, and the person continues to be affected after the original illness is cleared.
Patients often present with a strong pulse indicating their energy is actually ok, by it is stuck, not free flowing, leading to the symptoms. In Chinese and East Asian medicine we have concepts that explain this that we can use to treat. To harmonise the system, or rid the body of the lurking pathogen.

Who this may not be suitable for
Chronic fatigue and post viral symptoms can overlap with thyroid disorders, anaemia, depression, sleep apnoea and other conditions that need medical diagnosis and treatment in their own right. Acupuncture is not a substitute for that assessment, though it may still help alongside conventional treatment. Treatment may also need to be approached cautiously, with very light treatment, if you have severe post-exertional malaise, since even gentle overstimulation can cause a setback in some people with ME/CFS. We ask for a full medical history, and where relevant will suggest you see your GP alongside treatment.
