Acupuncture for Male Fertility in London: Does It Help Sperm Quality?

Acupuncture for Male Fertility in London

Acupuncture for male fertility is used to improve sperm count, motility and overall reproductive health alongside conventional fertility care. Research findings are mixed but genuinely promising in places, particularly for sperm motility and concentration. It works best as one part of a wider plan, alongside diet, lifestyle changes and any medical treatment you are already having.

In Short

  • Acupuncture for male fertility in London is most often used alongside, not instead of, medical fertility treatment.

  • Some trial evidence shows improved sperm concentration and motility with acupuncture compared with a ‘sham acupuncture’ control.

  • Other trials find the evidence less consistent, and we are upfront about that.

  • Chinese medicine for male fertility usually includes acupuncture plus dietary and lifestyle advice.

  • A full sperm cycle takes around 74 days, so treatment is typically planned over three months or more.

Does Acupuncture Help Male Fertility?

The honest answer is: it may help, and the research is still developing.

A network meta-analysis comparing non-pharmaceutical interventions for sperm quality, including acupuncture, omega-3, lycopene and vitamins, found acupuncture had a significant advantage over placebo in improving total sperm motility, alongside measurable gains in sperm concentration and forward motility (NIH/PMC, 2023).

Other reviews are more cautious. A systematic review of seven randomised trials in men with low sperm count or poor motility found acupuncture alone did not show a clear advantage over ‘sham’ acupuncture on its own, though it did appear to enhance the effect of conventional medication when used alongside it (PubMed, 2022).

We think it’s important to share both sides of that picture rather than only the flattering headline, however it has also been shown that sham acupuncture also has a physiological effect and should not be considered inert like a placebo. The effect size of placebo effects has also been measured and acupuncture and sham acupuncture have both been shown to have up to a 3x larger effect size. It can be argued that the acupuncture performs well in some trials despite the methodological.

Acupuncture to Improve Sperm Quality: What It’s Actually Used For

In practical terms, acupuncture to improve sperm quality is generally aimed at three things: sperm count, motility, meaning how well sperm move, and morphology, meaning their shape.

Points are chosen to support blood flow to the reproductive organs and to help regulate the hormonal signals involved in sperm production.

Because a full cycle of sperm production takes around 74 days, treatment for male fertility is planned over a minimum of three months, not a single course of a few sessions. Its a good idea to bear this in mind when planning your fertility journey.

Chinese Medicine for Male Fertility

Chinese medicine for male fertility often combines acupuncture with dietary and lifestyle guidance, and in some cases Chinese herbal medicine.

Traditional theory frames fertility issues in terms of underlying patterns, but in modern practice this translates into practical advice: reducing alcohol, addressing sleep and stress, managing weight, and identifying anything in daily habits, from cycling long distances to sauna use, that may be affecting sperm health.

This is combined with regular acupuncture sessions through the treatment period.

In Practice, What We See With Fertility Patients

In practice, in central London or the suburbs we often see couples who have been given a diagnosis of “unexplained” infertility, or an abnormal semen analysis with no clear next step from their fertility clinic.

What we tend to focus on first is anything obviously modifiable: sleep, stress load, alcohol, and general health markers, alongside a course of acupuncture.

Where people are using assisted reproductive techniques we are clear with patients from the outset that this is a supportive treatment.

In clinic we often see the sperm count and motility improve quite reliably over the three month treatment window, but morphology issues are more difficult and either take a lot longer or sometimes don’t respond.

For the goal of conceiving a child it works best in combination with medical investigation and any IVF or IUI protocol your clinic has recommended.

Who This May Not Be Suitable For

If you have not yet had a semen analysis or basic fertility investigation, we would usually recommend that first, so treatment can be targeted properly, and outcomes measured.

Acupuncture will not resolve fertility issues caused by structural problems, genetic conditions or some hormonal disorders that need direct medical treatment, though it can still be used supportively alongside these.

As with any acupuncture treatment, a significant needle phobia or bleeding disorder may affect suitability.
