Is it your habit to wake up, walk to the bathroom mirror, and stick out your tongue? To most people, it’s just a silly face. But in the world of Chinese medicine in London, that small muscle is actually a detailed map of your health.
It is one of the oldest and most reliable dashboards we have to see what is happening inside your body without needing a fancy scan.
At Acubody, we use tongue diagnosis as a standard part of our check-ups. Why? Because while you might forget to tell us that you’ve been feeling bloated or that you didn’t sleep well on Tuesday, your tongue never forgets. It shows us the history of your stress, your digestion, and your energy levels.
Your Tongue: The Mirror of Your Body
Your tongue is the mirror of your body, and you can think of it as a living weather map. Just like a weather reporter looks at clouds to predict rain, we look at the shape, colour, and coating of your tongue to see your internal climate.
Here’s what we check:
- The Tip: This represents your Heart and lungs. If it’s very red, it often means your mind is racing or you are feeling anxious.
- The Sides: These relate to your Liver. Red or scalloped edges (where it looks like a pie crust) usually mean you are stressed or holding onto tension.
- The Middle: This is the home of your Stomach and Spleen. This is where we see how well you are fueling your body.
- The Back: This area shows us your Kidney health and deep energy reserves.
What Your Tongue is Trying to Tell You
When you look at your tongue, you are looking for clues. Here are three common things we see at our clinic and what they usually mean for your health:
- The Strawberry Tip (Stress): If the very front of your tongue looks like a bright red strawberry, it’s a sign that your heat is rising. This usually happens when you are under a lot of pressure at work or if your brain won’t shut off at night. It’s your body’s way of saying, ‘I’m overheating!’
- The Tooth Marks (Digestion & Fatigue): Have you ever noticed little ripples along the sides of your tongue? These are marks from your teeth. In our practice, this often means your digestion is sluggish. Your body isn’t processing water or food efficiently, which can make you feel heavy, tired, and bloated.
- The Thick White Coat (Internal Humidity): A healthy tongue should have a very thin, clear-ish white coating. If that coating looks thick, greasy, or yellow, it’s like having internal fog. This usually happens when we eat too many processed foods or when our body is struggling to clear out waste.
How We Fix the Map
The best part about this map is that it changes. As you get better, your tongue changes too!
When you come in for an acupuncture treatment in London, we aren’t just poking spots; we are sending signals to the organs that show up on your tongue.
For example, if your tongue shows signs of stress, we might use a point called GV20 (Baihui) on the very top of your head to clear that heat. If your digestion looks weak, we might use ST36 (Zusanli) on your leg to give your stomach a boost.
Let’s Read Your Map Together
At Acubody, we don’t expect you to be an expert on your own tongue. That is what we are here for!
Understanding these signs is the first step toward feeling like yourself again. If you’re curious about what your body is trying to say, come visit us for a consultation. We can help you decode the messages and get your health back on track.
